‘64 Sport Fury
1964 Plymouth Sport Fury
The design was to make this high-end build that blends the aesthetics of 1960s drag racing with modern performance engineering.
Below are the technical details of the build:
Engine & Drivetrain
Engine: Originally a 383, it was upgraded to a 426 cubic-inch "Commando" V8 (Street Wedge).
Induction: Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold with a rebuilt Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor.
Exhaust: Aftermarket exhaust headers with Jet-Hot coating for heat management.
Cooling: High-performance radiator with a meticulously detailed, "factory-plus" engine bay appearance.
Transmission: Passon Performance A833 four-speed manual modified with an overdrive (0.80:1 ratio in 4th gear). It uses a McLeod 500-series organic/ceramic clutch.
Rear End: Custom-narrowed Dana 60 built by Strange Engineering, featuring a limited-slip differential and 3.70:1 gears.
Chassis & Suspension
Front Suspension: Refurbished factory independent torsion-bar setup with a powder-coated K-frame, lateral non-parallel control arms, and an anti-roll bar.
Rear Suspension: USCT Motorsport Mini Tub kit and a Super Stock leaf-spring conversion. The leaf springs were moved inboard to the subframe rails to accommodate much wider tires.
Brakes: Wilwood 12-inch disc brakes at all four corners (SRP rotors and Forged Dynalite calipers), specifically chosen to fit behind the 15-inch wheels.
Steering: Factory Chrysler recirculating-ball manual steering with a 22:1 ratio.
Wheels & Tires
The build uses a "Stocker" look with widened steel wheels to maintain a sleeper appearance.
Wheels: Stamped steel wheels (15x6" front / 15x10" rear).
Tires: Front: BFGoodrich Radials (215/65R15).
Rear: Massive Hoosier Pro-Street radials (29x12.5-15) tucked into the mini-tubs.
Exterior & Interior
Body: Finished in a factory-style Red-on-Red color scheme. The body underwent a rotisserie restoration to ensure perfect sheet metal before paint.
Interior: Restored to factory-original appearance using Legendary Auto Interiors upholstery. It retains the signature Sport Fury bucket seats and center console.
Instrumentation: Stock dashboard and gauges, supplemented by a subtle Hurst shifter.
Design Philosophy
The hallmark of this Pure Vision build is "Subtle Performance." Steve Strope designed the car to look like something a racer would have built in the mid-60s using the best parts available at the time, while the overdrive transmission and modern Wilwood brakes make it far more drivable than an actual 1964 race car.
